This evening we resurrected our R and R night. R and R is Reading and Recitation. We gathered in the family room and shared. I began reading the poem, Trees, by Joyce Kilmer. Abigail recited I'm Nobody, Who are You? by Emily Dickinson, followed by Longfellow's There was a little girl. She read Psalm of Life from her copywork for the week, which was a challenge to her because she's not adept at reading cursive writing. We moved on to Justin.
His poetry readings were The Destruction of Sennacharib by Lord Byron, and The Raven by E.A. Poe, his favorite poem. Joanna recited Psalm 34 and Aaron read from Hebrews 11. Bryan read some of his childhood favorites: E.E. Cummings' In a Pretty Little How Town, and The Last Duchess by Robert Browning.
After the poetry, we read from Sproul's The Righteous Shall Live by Faith. Overall, I think everyone enjoyed the evening. We used to have R and R night a few years ago and somehow got out of the habit. The kids were excited about starting up again. Perhaps we'll invite a friend or two when we get the routine established. It is pleasant to share a poem or story with someone.
